Development of Cypress Square was started in 1963 by the Wilson family with the first building opening in 1964. It was decided to go with a Spanish style architecture which came from the Wilsons joyful trips to Mexico. By 1969 Frank and Helen Wilson had developed most of their land (about half of what the shopping center is now) and asked their friends Bob and Eva Kennecott as well as Joe and Lavonne Curto to join them in acquiring the rest of the land to complete Cypress Square to the Sacramento River. Later the City would put Park Marina Drive through the property and under the Cypress Ave Bridge which became a popular access and exit to and from the area.
The shopping area from the 44 Freeway to Cypress Ave. was 2nd to the Downtown Mall in sales tax revenue to the City before Mount Shasta Mall was built and when the Mount Shasta Mall was built our shopping area still remain 2nd in sales tax revenue until the city included the all of the tax revenue for everything from the Mount Shasta Mall to K Mart to the south into one big group. Shortly after that the City quit tracking the tax revenue by location.
